Englischer Garten, Munich: All Year

Munich's famous park. It's gigantic.

The Englischer Garten is the go-to park in Munich and is certainly a must-see. It is absolutely massive. Being 910 acres big, it is the largest park in Germany. In summer, the Englischer Garten serves as Munich’s communal place to cool off, you can swim in the two rivers that run through the park but be aware that they have strong currents and that you enter them at your own risk. Apparently, one person drowns every year but this doesn’t seem to put anyone off! While you get swept downstream, watch out for the many surfers that ride the artificial waves that have been built in to the river. More importantly, you should know that the chance of coming across a totally naked sunbather in the park is very high. Despite the conservatism of Munich itself, some liberal German customs exist and this is perhaps the most obvious one. Riding round on a bike is the best way to get around the park, especially if you want to see the whole place. There are a few lakes on which you can rent pedal boats, as well as lots of food and drink places selling currywurst and beer, plus further in there is a large beer garden. You could easily spend a few days of your holiday here. In the summer, when it’s very hot the park fills up quickly and becomes very crowded. Also, you can climb up to the Monopteros for a very nice view of the Munich skyline and the park below.
