Edvard Munch is the father of Expressionism and one of the most controversial artists. But who was he really? Discover this pioneering, subversive artist, as the British Museum puts a light on his life and works.

During the pre-war period, Munch, rebellious and hungry for new experiences, rejected his strict Lutheran education to pursue an unconventional lifestyle: he travelled across Europe, taking inspiration from the bohemian circles he encountered and his passionate love affairs. Munch’s work articulated his experiences of life in a rapidly changing Europe, in cities like Oslo, Berlin and Paris, even though everything was going to be shattered by the first global industrialised conflict.

The emotional intensity of ‘The Scream’ has reverberated through history, speaking to generations: the fact that it needs no explanation is arguably one of its strengths. ‘The Scream’ speaks for itself, but we know so little about the person behind it.

In this  exhibition which has been organised in collaboration with the Munch Museum in Oslo, you get the chance to discover the artist and his remarkable works. Munch’s innovative techniques, bold use of colour and dark subject matter,  resonated with shifting attitudes and mark him out as one of the first truly ‘modern’ artists.
