Basilica of Macarena, Seville

The Basilica of Macarena is a Catholic church dating from 1941.

It is the work of the local architect Aurelio Gómez Millán and was built in honour of the Virgin "Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena", whose statue can be found in the altar of the basilica. This statue of the Virgin is one of the most famous in the procession because of its beauty and its decoration, which consists of a sumptuous garment, a gold crown and diamond tears. Next to the basilica stands the Macarena Arch, a ruin of the 12th-century rampart of the Almohad dynasty. At that time it was the king's gateway to the royal palace in Seville.
