Cibeles Square, Madrid

Arguably, the most emblematic, beautiful and bustling square in Madrid.

Plaza de Cibeles (Cybele’s square) is home to some of Madrid’s most impressive architecture. Cornered by the Bank of Spain and the palaces of Cybele, Linares and Buenavista, it really is no wonder that this plaza has become a symbol of Madrid. All these surrounding buildings really are a sight to see. However, the Cybele’s Palace is the most iconic and the most eye-catching. Formerly the headquarters of the Spanish postal service, the building is now occupied by Madrid City Council, though part of it is used as a cultural centre. Although you probably do not need any more reasons to visit Cybele’s Palace, it also has a mirador (viewing point) which offers stunning panoramic views of the city. The square and the palace inherit their name from the square’s centrepiece – the Fuente de Cibeles (Cybele’s fountain) – an 18th century masterpiece which depicts the Roman goddess Cybele on a chariot driven by lions. She has become a symbol of Madrid and the icon of Real Madrid Football team, which explains why Real Madrid’s victories are celebrated in the square.
