Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon

Inspired by the Champs-Elysees in Paris, Lisbon’s classiest boulevard is rich with 19th-century Portugese architecture.

The avenue was built after the earthquake in 1755 and named the Passeio Público (public street) - ironic given that it was once gated off from the city’s commoners.

Today much of its 1.5 kilometre stretch is fringed with elegant boutiques and hotels, as well as numerous embassies and diplomatic buildings. Following the boulevard north from Restauradores Square to Marquês de Pombal Square, you will stumble across fountains and shaded cafe tables, surrounded by beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture. As it’s 90 metres wide, it’s the perfect site for the annual Festas de Lisboa. Every June, each of the city’s districts compete for the best procession, filling the avenue with colourful floats, costumes and music.
