Peter and Paul Fortress, Saint Petersburg

Peter and Paul fortress is unique example of Russian fortification construction from the early 18th century with several museums inside.

Peter and Paul Fortress is situated at one of Saint Petersburg’s islands, the ground-plan of the fortress repeats the shape of the Zayachy (Hare) island. Six massive bastions, named after Peter the Great’s closest associates, who supervised their construction, are connected with curtain walls 32–39 feet high and 65 feet thick. Its purpose was to control the water are of the river Neva. The complex has several historical buildings inside. One of the most famous is Peter and Paul Cathedral, built in 1712 – 1733 as the main city cathedral. It is remarkable place because for two hundred years all Russian rulers from Peter I to Nicolas II (except Peter II and Ivan VI) and their families were buried there. Another famous part of the complex is Trubetskoy Bastion Prison that was main political prison from 1872 till 1921.

Don’t miss the traditional changing of the guard every Saturday during the summer season at midday.
