Feskekörka, Gothenburg

Feskekôrka is an indoor fish market in Gothenburg, Sweden.

While the name might leave you confused, a translation will almost certainly provide some clues. The “fish church” is a stylish insight into the Scandinavian seafood obsession.

Feskekörka has come a long way since 1874, now home to four independent companies selling all manner of freshly-caught fish, including the institution unto itself of gravad lax, or smoked salmon. If you’re feeling even more indulgent, head to one of the two ‘classy’ restaurants for lunch, dinner, or a wine-tasting.

In a country where people will have a summertime “crayfish party”, an entire church dedicated to seafood is hardly surprising.
