Carmen Thyssen Museum, Malaga

 The Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga is the perfect place to see Andalusian art. It features Spanish artists such as Zurbarán and Sorolla. 

The Carmen Thyssen Museum opened its doors to the public in 2011 in the Palacio de Villalón, a 16th century Renaissance palace in the historic centre of Malaga.

The permanent collection includes more than 250 works from the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, and it features Spanish artists such as  Francisco de Zurbarán, Joaquín Sorolla, Ignacio Zuloaga and Julio Romero de Torres.  And don’t miss the outstanding and unusual collection of Andalusian painting.

The collection is divided into four sections that follow a chronological order. The section dedicated to the Old Masters comprises works from the 13th to the 17th centuries and includes religious scenes by Jerónimo Ezquerra and still lifes by Diego Valentín Díaz.

In the second section, Romantic Landscape and Costumbrismo, landscapes painted by masters such as Barrón y Carrillo, Cortés y Aguilar or Lucas Velázquez share space with folkloric works signed by Dehodencq, Domínguez Bécquer and Bejarano.

The room dedicated to the Précieux Style and Naturalist Painting reflects the change that Spanish painting underwent in the mid-19th century, becoming more colorful and spontaneous. Landscapes, in turn, evolved into a realism,  based on the artist’s observation.

Finally, Fin-de-siècle goes back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries featuring works by Regoyos, Casas, Sorolla and Iturrino, key figures in the modernisation of Spanish painting.
