San Michele in Bosco, Bologna: All Year

San Michele in Bosco welcomes pilgrims and travellers who fancy to see Bologna from another angle.

The monumental complex San Michele in Bosco is located on one of the Bolognese Hills not far from the city's historical center. A pleasant walk up the hill is rewarded by a stunning view over Bologna. In addition to the superb panoramic view, there is an information board pointing out all the places of interest, making it a great spot for scanning the city and taking pictures.

The church of San Michele in Bosco is quite small but, richly decorated as it is, makes a bigger impression than the grand cathedrals. The complex includes both the church and the nearby convent, once belonging to the Olivetans. The first structures date back as far as the 4th century AD. However, San Michele was rebuilt during the Middle Ages, restyled during the 15th century and then redecorated by the Olivetans. Today we can admire the Renaissance-style façade by Rossetti and a splendid marble entrance by Peruzzi from Siena. The first floor of the building belongs to the believers, while the second ー to the monks, both richly decorated with precious frescoes and paintings.

Surprisingly, during the Napoleonic era San Michele was used as barracks and a prison. Then it was transformed into a Papal residence before it became the royal residence. Today it welcomes pilgrims and travellers who are desirous to see Bologna from another perspective.
