Byzantine And Christian Museum, Athens

A rich and unique display of Byzantine artistic heritage the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens is a Must! The museum is beautifully and easily laid out thus providing a good time.

Intricate mosaics, sculpture, artifacts, vibrant paintings - feast your eyes on the relics of Byzantium. Art and culture flourished under the mingled influences of the Classical and Eastern world, leaving an array of masterpieces depicting pagan myths as well as Christian icons.

The collections of the Byzantine Museum chart the course of Greek art from the 4th to the 19th century. As well as representing the artistic production of the Greek area, the museum also spans other regions both central and peripheral to the Byzantine empire and traces the cultural legacies into the post-Byzantium period.

The museum was founded in 1914. From 1930 on it has been housed in the "Ilisia" mansion, which belonged to the Duchess of Placentia and was built in 1848 by the architect Aristotle Zachos.
