Gardiki Castle, Corfu

A 13th-century Byzantine castle which was one of three castles which defended the island during the Venetian era (1401–1797).

Gardiki Castle guarded the island's south, Kassiopi Castle the northeast and Angelokastro the northwest. It was built by a ruler of the Despotate of Epirus. (Epirus was one of the states that was succeeded by the Byzantine Empire).

Remains from 20,000 B.C., (when Corfu was still attached to the mainland region of Epirus), were found on the site of the castle including hunter-gatherer stone tools and animal bones, which are now in the Archaeological Museum of Corfu.

The walls of Gardiki Castle are octagonal with eight towers decorated by rows of tiles. Although partially in ruins, the towers are still at their original height. The entrance to the castle is still intact but the inside is in ruins.

Gardiki Castle is one of the most imposing architectural ruins in the Ionian Islands, along with Angelokastro, Kassiopi Castle and the two Venetian fortresses of Corfu City.

The castle was never captured despite frequent attacks and sieges and it defended the island during three sieges by the Ottomans.
