Vido Island, Corfu

This small island is at the mouth of the port of Corfu.

The island is the final resting place of many thousands of Serbian soldiers killed in the First World War. It was used as a quarantine camp for those who suffered from typhoid. You can still see some tee-pee scout camps with mattresses inside as well as monuments erected by Serbians in the 1930s as a token of gratitude to the Greek nation. Over 5,000 people were also buried at sea near the island, so the waters are often referred to as the “Blue Sea Tomb” as coined by poet Milutin Bojić.
