Nussbaumpark, Munich: Summer

This little park is perfect for those who are in the centre of Munich and simply want a green space to rest in. If the Englischer Garten is just a little further away than you’d like it to be after your tiring day’s sightseeing, then this park might do as an alternative. As soon as you lounge in one of the park’s free deck chairs you’ll think that the Englischer Garten is so overrated. If you have kids with you then the park’s play-area will occupy them while you can grab a well earned beer.

The Nussbaumpark is right next to Sendlinger Tor, behind a large church, and it offers a wide variety of activities for given that it is, after all, a patch of grass with a few trees in the mix. In the summer months the park hosts regular music events, DJ nights and you can borrow games from the vendors at the centre of the park. These vendors also sell traditional hot food and drinks at very reasonable prices. In fact, the drinks shack has a rotating program of craft beers, which is updated on the weekend.

The Nussbaumpark really feels like a sheltered haven, away from the cramped and sometimes overwhelming setting of the Altstadt, yet it’s still right next to the centre of town, the sound of traffic only slightly muffled. When I went there I sat down in a deck chair, fell asleep for a good hour and woke up ready to move on to my next destination.
