The Church of Purgatorio, Matera

Don’t miss the visit to this beautiful church with its convex façade- the shape of an archbishop's mitre.

Built-in 1747 in the late Baroque style, it has a facade decorated with the theme of death and the redemption of souls. Noteworthy is the wooden portal,  divided into 36 squares showing at the top,  the skulls of priests and royalty and at the bottom those of ordinary citizens. The interior has a Greek cross floor plan with  Baroque altars in polychrome marble.

It was built by the Confraternita delle Sante Anime del Purgatorio in 1723 when Matera had about 20  brotherhoods out of a population of 15,000 inhabitants.
