Nice Cathedral, Nice, Provence

Between 1650 and 1865 the original 11th-century church was gradually replaced by the Baroque cathedral that you see today.

The church that first occupied the site in Old Nice was consecrated in 1049. Towards the end of the 12th-century, the chapel became a priory of the Abbey of Saint-Pons. The city’s growing population led to extensions being added throughout the 15th-century.

Inspired by the early Baroque architecture in Rome, the cathedral has a basilical layout with a triple nave and  transept. New structures and decorative elements were added until 1949, when it was declared a minor basilica. The interior, which is also traditionally Baroque in style, has 10 chapels dedicated to various Saints and sacraments.
