Renishaw Hall and Gardens, Derbyshire, England

This is one of the few historic houses in the UK which is still lived in by the same family who roamed the hall almost 400 years ago.

The Sitwell family, owners of the hall, have been renowned throughout the centuries for their talents across the arts. This was particularly true of siblings Dame Edith, Sir Osbert and Sir Sachaverell, renowned for their contributions in poetry, novels, art, architecture, and ballet between the late 1800s and 1900s.

Delve into the trios’ lives through the family’s private collection of letters, books, and artifacts at the Sitwell museum and discover the house by joining a tour. Visitors should be aware that the Hall can only be viewed through the guided tours which run every Friday at 13:00 or 14:30 (and at the same times on Saturdays and Sundays throughout August).

The grounds at Renishaw offer walks through flowering lawns, dazzling sculptures, restful lakes, and teeming woodlands. The gardens, having secured multiple awards including the HHA Christie’s Garden of the Year Award 2015 and Visit England’s Hidden Gem Accolade Award 2017, are thoughtfully designed with intricate Italian influences.

With dogs welcome and a maze to entertain the kids, it is well worth a family trip. For the adults, Renishaw Gardens is home to what was once the most northern Vinyard in the world. Here, visitors can experience the winemaking process first-hand and can sip on the well-known local Atkinson wine. What better way to unwind and admire Renishaw’s beauty? A handful of shops and businesses occupy the old Stables Courtyard which remains open to browse if you can't control the urge for some shopping.
