The New Room, Bristol

This is the oldest Methodist building in the world, dating back to 1739.

The New Room has witnessed the development of Methodism from an 18th-century religious movement into a 21st-century Christian denomination of over 75 million members worldwide. The museum, which has 12 rooms for you to discover, tells the story of John and Charles Wesley and 18th-century Methodism, also revealing what life was like in Georgian Bristol. Regular worship is still held at the chapel today, but it is also used as a space for a variety of exhibitions, performances and lectures. The New Room was also used as a set for the BBC’s hit period drama Poldark, transforming into the ‘Bodmin Assizes Court’ for the trial of Captain Ross Poldark.
