Sarehole Mill, Birmingham

This is a 250 year old watermill famous for its association with author J.R.R.Tolkien.

There has been a mill on the site since 1542, but the current building dates from the mid-18th-century, during which it produced sheet metal used for button manufacturing. It has two waterwheels and a steam engine and chimney which were added in the 1850s. Tolkien lived across the road from the mill, which inspired his writings of Middle-earth, it is part of the ‘Tolkien Trail’ which follows the childhood footsteps of the author and the places which influenced his writing. Nowadays it is home to a modern day bakery serving baked goods and pizzas.
