The stunning Musée Picasso in the heart of le Marais is organising an exhibition, along with the Tate Modern, devoted to one of the most productive and happy years of its namesake’s career.

For an artist as versatile as Picasso, each year truly can delineate a whole new focus. In 1932, that focus was Marie-Thérèse, his lover and muse. Picasso’s style is immediately recognisable in the seemingly random blocks of colour and artfully displaced features. In spite of their unnatural distortion, his portraits of Marie-Thérèse are unmistakably romantic and intimate. Scenes of her sleeping, reading and writing evoke a happy and peaceful domesticity. Besides the output of the numerous portraits of his muse, 1932 was a prolific year: his famous Baigneuses appeared, as well as a return to crucifixion scenes. Increasingly surrealist in his approach, Picasso was firmly established as an influential figure in the art world, as denoted by the first edition of the Zervos Catalogue Raisonné of his work being published, and a series of solo exhibitions in the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris.

The show is a comprehensive reflection of a particularly iconic year in Picasso’s career and its strict chronological order serves this biographical purpose well. As a visitor, you’re encouraged to think about Picasso:  the man, his emotions, his inspirations, and the one-year time frame precludes you from having to wade through too much information to get to grips with what you’re looking at. These colourful works are amongst Picasso’s most beautiful and most romantic.
