Musée d'archéologie méditerranéenne, Marseille: All Year

The Musée d'archéologie méditerranéenne (the Museum of Mediterranean Archaeology) has collections dedicated to the artistic heritage of Egypt, the Mediterranean civilisations (Cyclades, Cyprus, Greece, Greater Greece, Etruria, Rome) and the Celtic-Ligurian civilisation. The exhibition includes artefacts from ancient Egypt and is the largest collection in France after the Louvre.

This is a user friendly way for you to learn how people of former civilisations imagined the world, its structure, religion and how they eternalised it in different regions.

The museum is in the magnificent Vieille Charité which was built between 1671 and 1749 in the  Baroque style, designed by the famous Marseille architect, Pierre Puget. Although the architect died before the building was finished, his Baroque chapel in Vieille Charité is recognised for its original design, even if the facade of the chapel dates back to the 19th century. The famous French architect, Le Corbusier also contributed to the well-being of the building when he saved Vieille Charité from destruction in the 1950s.

The second floor of the building houses the Musée d'Arts Africains, Océaniens, Amérindiens - MAAOA (the Museum of the arts of Africans, Oceanians, Native Americans).
