The Port, Border Territory, Exhibition, Maritime Museum of Barcelona: 25 January-25 September 2018

A journey through the port neighbourhoods of Barcelona over a period of almost 100 years.

Port cities are different from other cities. Neither sea nor firm land, they have a porous nature, allowing new products, people, and ideas to enter, making them the most multicultural and advanced cities. In Barcelona the sense of ‘port culture’ was emphasised by the walls which circumscribed the city from the rest of Spain. However, there is another, lesser known, darker side to port cities. This exhibition exposes Barcelona’s port as a place where it hid everything that it didn’t want people to see. Bothersome and dangerous things such as industry, leisure and entertainment, as well as the underworld of poverty and crime were squeezed out of the city walls and relegated to the border areas of the port.

The exhibition, displayed on huge concrete blocks, is structured chronologically in 10 sections and takes us on a tour through the different neighbourhoods of the port area, beginning in 1900 and taking us up until the olympic transformations started in the 80s and finished in 1999.

Whilst the Barcelona’s port is a dumping ground for the undesirable aspects of society, it is also the very reason for which the city exists and thrives. This exhibition epitomises the dual nature of Barcelona’s port, showing two different edges to the same knife.
