Exhibition which explores the unknown sounds and purposes of music in times gone by.

The exhibition covers over 3,000 years of history from the third millennium BC to the fourth century AC, and an equally vast geographical range, from the Orient to Rome via Egypt and Greece. Fruit of the work of numerous curators, historians, archaeologists, ethnomusicologists and acousticians, this exhibition pieces together many diverse parts of the jigsaw puzzle and builds an impression of the different roles that music played in ancient civilisations.

A collection of almost 400 fragile and miraculously preserved items such as instruments, statues, ceramics, texts, mosaics and coins are on display, some of which for the first time. These musical objects and depictions of musical scenes give us an insight into the social, religious and political workings of these ancient societies, in which it is clear that music played an important role, whether it were religious, secular, or to raise morale before an important battle.

It is impossible to know exactly how these ancient musics sounded because sound recording did not exist, but audio devices allow visitors to listen to reconstructions of ancient instruments. Though far removed from the music of today, the exhibition also sheds light on the foundation of our musical heritage.
