An exhibition to celebrate the return of Salvatore Ferragamo to Italy in 1927, but also an overview of the Italian artistic scene at the time.
It wasn’t just Ferragamo that was returning to his home country, but Italy returning to itself too. A return to a life after war. The “shoemaker to the stars” chose to live in Florence when he came back because of its convenient central location and artistic heritage. It was, after all, the birthplace of the Renaissance.
The exhibition follows a story format, beginning with Ferragamo’s cruise journey back to Italy, then his subsequent inspiration from the Florentine visual culture. Featured are paintings, sculptures and photographs, each providing glimpses into what life and art were like then. There are hints of futurism, scenes from everyday Florence, and even exotic influences, all of which act as little pieces in the grand mosaic of 1920s Italy created by this exhibition.
