Gaetano Previati presents the passion of Christ captured on canvas at the Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini.
The Museo Diocesano has chosen this period of Lent to host an exhibition that makes you reflect on Christ’s passion. The exhibition opens with the painting La Via al Calvario, a new addition to the collections of the Diocesan Museum. Here, many despairing women are depicted on their journey to Calvary, the site of Christ’s crucifixion.
The viewpoint then shifts to Christ walking along the road himself in the series of paintings known as Via Crucis. These 14 pieces depict the various stages of his journey: his taking up of the cross’ burden, meeting with the Virgin Mary, and finally being stripped and nailed to the cross. Through the colour usage and angles of lighting, the focus is clearly Jesus and that simply highlights his pain and suffering.
