Donaupark, Vienna

The Donaupark is a fabulous park with a dark history.

At the Donaupark history and nature seem to merge and share the same space. Dotted across the Danube Park’s vivid green fields you can find statues of the most important figures in international history. They range from Salvador Allende’s bust to a statue of Simon Bolivar, every corner of Donaupark representing an crucial moment in history.

Since 1979 the park has hosted the UN office in Vienna. The Vienna International Centre, also known as UNO-city, hosts various international organizations’ offices, including the preparatory commission for the Test Ban Treaty, which works to ban nuclear arms testing.

However, Donaupark was not always a peaceful spot. When the Nazis were in power the park was the Kagran firing range, used by the soldiers of the Third Reich. A commemorative plaque remembers the many people executed here.

The imposing Danube Tower, 252 metres tall, dominates the park. It is the tallest building in Austria and from the top one can admire every corner of the city.

The statue of Che Guevara and the papal cross dedicated to John Paul II. Be sure not to miss the Korean culture house.
