The Academy of Fine Arts is a famous art school in Vienna.
Egon Schiele, Ernst Fuchs, Peter Sloterdijk and Harun Faroki are just some of the famous names in the world of art who have attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The academy was created in 1692 following the models of other French and Italian academies.
The current building, at Schillerplatz, was designed by Theophil Hansen and inaugurated in 1877. There are close on 110,000 books and 150,000 engravings and drawings, in the library; one of the largest in the country. The Academy has its own art collection which kicked off with a donation of 800 paintings by Count Lamberg-Sprinzenstein in 1822, and which has continued to grow over the years. The works are exhibited in permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The Paintings Gallery is closed on January 1 as well as on December 24 and 25.
