Palais de Tokyo, Paris

Making up the largest centre for contemporary arts in the whole of Europe, the Palais de Tokyo and the museums it includes constitute a landmark in their own right.

Pale pillars rise at regular intervals above the wavering waters of the pool below, where sculptures recline before walls wrapped in ornate reliefs. This exquisite building was designed for the 1937  exposition internationale des arts et des techniques.  Following a number of projects and creative endeavours on the same site, the Palais exhibition space opened in its present form in 2002.

Ambitious, adventurous and irreverent, the Palais plays with cutting-edge contemporary artworks. Setting out to surprise, the artists toy with your sense of the ordinary and the bizarre. The artworks create contrasts between vibrancy and violence, enormity and intimacy, seduction and tranquillity, the fabulous and the forbidden.

The Palais' four cinema screens are sometimes used for video links with current exhibitions or for special events. Concerts, conferences and lectures also take place here on a regular basis. And while you're there, be sure to visit the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Musée National d'Art Moderne, which are housed in the same building
