Santi Quattro Coronati, Rome: All Year

The ancient basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati will take you out of time, where past and present become one.

The ancient basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati takes you out of time, where past and present become one. This tasteful church is found in a quiet, green area of Rome, just minutes away from the Colosseum on the way to San Giovanni in Laterano.

Built in the 4th century, Santi Quattro Coronati was dedicated to four unknown Roman soldiers who became martyrs when they refused to kill masons who wouldn't sculpt the pagan statue of Aesculapius.

One of the most original buildings of Roman religious architecture is surmounted by an authentic Romanesque bell tower with a single row of four light windows. The apse of the church fascinates its visitors with its vivid detail and elegance, and the floor exemplifies the cosmatesque style, so characteristic of the architecture of Medieval Italy. Remains of 12th-century frescoes are definitely worth closer inspection.

The chiostro remains the most treasured part of the church. This amazing open arcade along the walls of the church is the work of the genius of the 12th-century Roman marble craftsmen.

Embrace the special atmosphere of timelessness and enchanting beauty of SS Quattro Coronati!
