Croatian National Theater, Split

Built in 1893 by local people, with mostly Italian artists involved in the interior design, it  represents a continuation of the rich theatrical history of Split. The building was designed by local architects Emilio Vecchietti and Ante Bezić, in a Renaissance style. The interior was designed by the artists Eugenio Scomparini, Napoleone Cozzi and Josip Varvodić.

The building was restored in 1920, when it was renamed the National Theatre for Dalmatia. In 1928 during the Kingdom of Yugoslavia the theatre  merged with the Sarajevo National Theatre and became known as the  "National Theater for Western Regions".

Outside performance or rehearsal hours. You can go in to look at  the stage and interior which has a  high ceiling, with interesting painted ornaments in neutral colours, the floor is also decorated with geometric figures. It can seat around 1000 people and was the largest theatre  in Southeast Europe when it was built. You can see  opera, drama and ballet there as well as the two major annual festivals: Split Summer Festival and Days of Marulić.

Despite all the changes and turmoil, the theatre is billed as the "premier theatre house in Dalmatia" and "one of the biggest and oldest theatre houses in the Mediterranean.
