Cathedral of Saint Domnius, Split

A Catholic cathedral in the city of Split, Saint Domnius was built in the 4th century, and consecrated at the turn of the 7th century AD.

It includes a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and a bell tower dedicated to Saint Domnius. The latter was built a bit later than the church, in 1100 AD, in a Romanesque style.

The cathedral originated from an Imperial Roman mausoleum of Diocletian and is composed of three different sections of different ages. The main part is Emperor Diocletian's mausoleum, built from local limestone and marble. Later, in the 17th century a choir was added to the eastern side of the mausoleum.

The wooden doors on the cathedral are one of the best examples of Romanesque sculpture in Croatia. On the first floor of the sacristy is the cathedral treasury which includes the Romanesque ‘The Madonna and Child’ panel painting, chalices and reliquaries by goldsmiths, and famous books like the Book of Gospels.

It is regarded as the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world still  in use in its original state, without general restoration, to this day.
