Croatian Maritime Museum, Split

The Croatian Maritime Museum is  in the 17th-century Gripe Fortress, the only fully preserved fortified building in Split  that played a key role in the defence of the city against the Ottoman threat. It was founded in  1997 by the Split city council.

The items are divided into many different collections, researches, archives and exhibits artefacts and documents relating to the maritime heritage of the Adriatic coast ranging from prehistory to modern times.

The first exhibition area, comprising more than 500 exhibits, shows the development of sailing ships from Classical times through to the age of steam. There is an outdoor exhibition in the courtyard, including examples of traditional Croatian shipbuilding.

The Military Maritime Exhibition is devoted to Croatian maritime warcraft on the Adriatic Sea from Classical times, tracing its history through crucial battles such as the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the Battle of Vis in 1811 and many more. The final section of the latter includes a collection of torpedoes, a weapon invented by the Great officer Ivan Lupis, and made by the British engineer Robert Whitehead in Rijeka in 1866.
