This is a protected area which includes the ruins of Diocletian's Palace, (built between the late 3rd and the early 4th centuries A.D), Romanesque churches, mediaeval fortifications, and palaces in Gothic Renaissance and Baroque style.
Reusing materials from the ancient mausoleum, the palace was intended to be the retirement residence of Diocletian with about half for his personal use, and the rest for the military garrison.
Between the 12th and 14th centuries, the Romanesque bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius was built. In November 1979, it was included in the register of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.
The Palace is built from white local limestone and marble most of which was from marble quarries on the island of Brač.
Diocletian's Palace was used as a location for filming the fourth season of the HBO series Game of Thrones.
