Iron Gate, Split

Like the other three gates giving access to the Diocleatian Palace, the Iron Gate was built in the 4th century AD. It has a single stone Roman  arch with  simple decorative elements.

In the 6th century a small church dedicated to St. Theodore was built above the gate. Later, in the 11th century, a pre-Romanesque bell tower was built making it the oldest bell tower to survive on the Adriatic Coast.
