Known for its vibrant atmosphere, Marmontova Street, dates back to 1806 when it was named after Napoleon's marshal Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de Marmont who was responsible for reorganising the city, during the short-term French administration in Dalmatia from 1806 to 1813.
Marshal Marmont, who played a significant role in the Napoleonic Wars, was also responsible for urban planning in Split during the French occupation in the early 19th century. The architecture along the street is a mix of historic buildings and more modern structures, combining traditional and contemporary elements.
