City Walls, Dubrovnik

The intricate system of forts, casemates, bastions, towers and detached forts is made of limestone to provide a magnificent view of the old town, the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding landscape.

The fortified walls extend for about 1.2 miles (2 km) around the old town of Dubrovnik. Their height varies, reaching up to 25 metres (82 ft) in some places.

Originally built in the 9th century, the walls were further strengthened and reinforced over the centuries, with the main construction completed in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Allow 1-2 hours to walk around them. Don’t forget comfortable shoes and water, especially in the warmer months as there is little shade on the walls.
