Theater des Westens, Berlin

Renamed the Volksoper under Nazi rule, the Theater des Westerns opened in 1896 but was badly damaged in bombings during the Second World War.

Renamed the Volksoper under Nazi rule, the Theater des Westerns opened in 1896 but was badly damaged in bombings during the Second World War. Originally it was dedicated to showing operas, and saw the premier of many famous german operas including Der Goldene Pierrot by Walter Goetze in 1934. In 1961, it became the first theatre in Germany to stage musicals, showing Loewe’s My Fair Lady.  It has become one of the most loved musical theatre venues in Germany- it’s Berlin’s equivalent to London’s West End. In the 1980’s, the interior and facade were restored to its former Whilhemian glory, so you can enjoy productions like people did when it first opened over 120 years ago.
