Schloss Köpenick (Kopenick Palace) - Berlin

Standing proudly on a man-made island on the edge of the river Dahme, the Baroque-style Kopenick Palace was built in the 17th century.

Standing proudly on a man-made island on the edge of the river Dahme, the Baroque-style Kopenick Palace was built in the 17th century. It was built on the site of a 6th century slavic palace which became a 16th century hunting lodge, but Frederic I of Prussia had the lodge rebuilt and made larger, which is what you can see today. You’ll find out more about the site’s complex origins at the archeological exhibition in the basement of the palace. Enjoy the riverside views as you explore the historic gateway and chapel, and have a snack in the old servants building that is now a cafe. The house itself is now part of the Museum of Decorative Arts, displaying ornate furniture, wallpaper, and tapestries that were once commonplace in grand houses. Highlights include the Wiesentheid Chamber of Mirrors, which dates back from the 1720s, and the famous silver buffet that once stood in the Knight’s Hall of Berlin Palace. Look out for the original Baroque plasterwork which has survived the test of time in many of the rooms.
