Gellert Hill and Statue, Budapest

Built on an 140m-high rock, Gellért Hill offers some of the best views of Budapest. The nearby statue is of the Bishop Gellért, a Christian martyr.

The banks of the river Danube are a World Heritage Site, and encompass the highest viewing point in Budapest: Gellért Hill. The biggest draw to the hill are the viewing platforms, which provide a sweeping panorama of Pest on the opposite bank.

The statue holding a cross is Bishop Gellért (Hungarian for “Gerard”), who was thrown from the hill during Hungary’s Christian purges in the 11th century. He manages to strike a defiant pose, and is one of several striking statues in the city including the Fisherman’s Bastion, Shoes on the Danube and Kossuth Lajos.

One of the best times to visit is just before sunset, when the views are especially dramatic and the crowds somewhat thinner. Luckily you don’t have to climb the hill on foot (although you can if you want to). Regular buses will take you most of the way up.

While you’re here, you should definitely make the most of your visiting by taking a look at the hill’s other attractions. You can read about these elsewhere on the Divento website, and include the Gellért baths, the Citadella fortress, and the intriguing Cave Church.
