Museum of Greek Folk Art, Athens

In a restored old house in the heart of the historic Plaka district of Athens, right at the foot of the Parthenon, the Greek Museum of Folk Art is something of a hidden gem for anyone interested in Greece’s vast popular artistic heritage.

A range of art forms are exhibited in separate sections, one of the most interesting being the shadow theatre. Originally from the orient, the traditional Greek shadow theatre is a mix of music, theatrical art and political and social commentary, with stories inspired by Greek history, mythology, folklore and everyday life.

Other sections include a large section on weaving and traditional dress in which you can see the different techniques and costumes used and their regional variations and sections on metal-work, silver-work and wood-work with beautiful and intricate examples of belts, wedding crowns, flasks, church furniture and other decorative or practical crafted items.

The section on folk painting is for the most part dedicated to Greece’s most famous popular artist, the self-taught Theofilos (1868-1934), whose paintings often depict Greek mythology and history, while the remaining sections display examples of embroidery, sculpture and ceramics.
