Cuvilliés Theatre, Munich

One of the finest Rococo theatres in Germany, the Cuvilliés Theatre (also known as the Old Residenz theatre) saw the premiere of one of Mozart’s most famous works, the opera Idomeneo in January 1781.

Built between 1751 and 1753 by François de Cuvilliés as the exclusive court theatre of the neighbouring Munich Residenz, today anyone can attend performances of Mozart’s works by, for example, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Although most of the theatre was destroyed during the Second World War, you can still admire the original carved, gilded panelling that lines the four tiers of boxed seating, stowed away for security during the war and restored in 1950.
