Richard Strauss's 1905 Salome ensured the composer's status as Wagner’s successor in the history of German opera. Lydia Steier directs this production of Salome at the Opera Bastille in 2022.

Adapted from Oscar Wilde's play of the same name, Salome, Richard Strauss's first great operatic masterpiece, marks a turning point in the history of 20th-century opera by virtue of its audacity and profound originality. The rich and varied orchestration combines expressive power, requiring the singers to exceed their limits, and extreme refinement. Elza Van den Heever plays the legendary Princess of Judea under the baton of Simone Young in Lydia Steier's production focussing on the work's decadent essence.
