Francesco Cilèa composed a light, brilliant and expressive score with ample and generous melodies, based on a libretto of immense theatrical and dramatic imact. Conducted by Jader Bignamini, Anna Netrebko and then Anna Pirozzi play the title role in David McVicar's production, as elegant as a painting by Watteau and bringing to life a seething 18th century where the passions on stage echo those of real life.
