Built in 1385 by Bartolino da Novara, Este Castle, in the heart of Ferrara tells the glorious history of the powerful Este family with its mighty towers and a water-filled moat surrounding its walls. Originally it was built as a defensive fortress, but later later became a noble residence during the Renaissance, when it was ‘tarted up’ to look more elegant.
The castle was the cradle of the Este's political and military power for centuries. Within its walls, you can see the Hall of Games, used nowadays for parties and celebrations, and the Chamber of the Newlyweds, frescoed by the Renaissance painter Cosmè Tura which gives you an idea of the refined lifestyle of the Este family.
Don’t miss the prison, with its dark cells and mysterious corridors known as the "Lions' Tower."
