O'Brien's Tower, County Clare, Ireland

Built in 1835 by Cornelius O’Brien this tower is a beacon along the 8km stretch of cliffs which lie either side.

A descendant of the ancient High King of Ireland Brian Boru, as well as the O’Brien’s of Bunratty Castle and the Kings of Thormond, Cornelius was well placed to make his mark. With a drop of 214m from the cliff edge to the sea, the tower adds even more height to the view of the wilderness beyond.

With an observation point that has lured tourists since it was first built it is easy to get a feel for the terrain over which the Celts once wandered. And although the Celts are famed for their imposing castles, very often they preferred the outdoor nomadic life, revelling in the hunt and becoming one with their harsh surroundings. From this vantage point you can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, as well as The Twelve Pins and the Maum Turk Mountains to the north in Connemara and Loop Head to the South.
