Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, County Clare, Ireland

This microcosm of Irish history at the Bunratty museum was a Viking trading post in 95AD, and follows the turbulent events ever since.

The folk park recreates rural and urban life in 19th century Ireland, with the homes of farmers, fishermen, blacksmiths and wealthy landowners as well as a watermill, church and village street all authentically restored to transport you back in time. And a traditional Irish evening is held in the Great Barn (May-Oct, subject to demand).

At one end of the folk park is Knappogue Castle built in 1425 by the MacNamara Clan ( MacNamara, the local publican, will gladly tell you first hand about his ancestors over a pint of Guinness in Mac’s Pub). The Castle contains furnishings and tapestries from the 15th and 16th centuries, and grand Medieval Banquets are also held in the Castle all year round.
