The Theatre del Maggio Musicale - situated in the Teatro Comunale building - has become the centre of musical life in Florence. Every year it hosts prestigious European music festivals - il Maggio Musicale, the oldest event of this kind in Europe. The festival takes place in May and June, yet the theatre operates all year, presenting operas, concerts and ballets.
The Theatre has seen many world-famous conductors and composers perform there as well as the debut of a then unknown Maria Callas. Originally an open-air area - the Politeama Fiorentino designed in 1862 - Teatro del Maggio Musicale is now by far the most beautiful theatre in Florence.
The theatre also contains unique Piccolo Teatro, a mini theatre within a theatre. This is on one side of the main auditorium and seats 600 people.
In the last few decades the Teatro del Maggio Musicale has come to symbolise the city of Florence's sense of regeneration and will to start again, since it was partially destroyed in an air raid in 1944 and in a flood in 1966.
The biggest and most important events in Tuscany are bound to take place there.
