Transformed in recent years into a modern theatre, this 15th-century opera house was, and is, the central part of Ferrara’s cultural scene.
Pause under the loggiato (covered walkway) leading to the theatre’s entrance, where theatre-goers waited for their carriages after the opera. Catch one of the theatre’s 100+ shows every year, from concerts, to opera, to dance, and marvel at the intricately decorated tiers of boxed seating. Lift your eyes upwards from the stage to see the ceiling paintings of scenes from the life of Julius Caesar, a nod to the patriotic spirit of the era.
