At the heart of Bordeaux is the Jardin Public, a green oasis to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
This park was created specifically for the public in 1746 by Intendant Tourny on land no longer suitable for growing vines. He wanted to create a refreshing green space for the locals in the heart of the city. Originally designed by Jacques Ange Gabriel in a typical French style, the garden was re-landscaped in 1856 into an English garden with a pond. The park combines 11 hectares of greenery with an arboretum, a library, a botanical garden, and a museum of natural history. If you like feeding ducks, you’ll find them near the giant lake. After a stroll, go and grab a bite or a drink in the park’s excellent brasserie "L’Orangerie".
The natural beauty as well as the sculptures and listed buildings of the Jardin Public has earned it the classification “Jardin Remarquable de France” (a remarkable garden of France). There’s a lot of attractions for children here such as playgrounds, a historic carousel and the famous "Guignol Guérin" puppet theatre.
