The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc is one of the most famous attractions in Barcelona which receives over 2.5 million visitors each year. Built for the Universal Exposition of 1929, the fountain is the centrepiece of a string of water and light features which descend in waterfalls and small ponds from the National Palace (MNAC) all the way down to Plaza de España.

This unique installation combines water, coloured lights and music to provide free open-air shows for the public. Combining hydraulic and illumination elements allows for a great amount of flexibility, meaning the fountain has over 7.000 million different possible combinations of water and light.

The water choreographies are automatically generated on analysis of the piece of music, which could be anything from Spanish classical music to Lady Gaga. The water, beautifully illuminated in different colours, is constantly creating new shapes which transform seamlessly as different jets of water rise and fall in time to the music, almost as though it were dancing. It’s a captivating watch which will leave adults just as awe-inspired as children.
