Contemporary art gallery in Barcelona, founded in 1999 by three friends united by a shared passion and commitment for art.
Villa del Arte Gallery currently represent over 30 national and international established and emerging artists in the areas of painting, sculpture and photography. They hold solo and collective exhibitions in the gallery, and their openness to lesser-known artists has contributed to an ever-changing contemporary collection of artwork at a consistently high standard.
The gallery, located right next to the Cathedral of Barcelona, is hidden within the historical Pia Almoina building which also houses the Museo Diocesano, with whom Vila del Arte sometimes collaborate with. The gallery is an enormous open space in which the only obstacles are the square brick pillars which support the gently arched ceilings. There are numerous smaller spaces which branch off from the main room, and the space has a slightly industrial feel about it, perhaps due to the huge steel piping that runs along the ceiling above your head. The large expanses of bright white walls allow space for each piece of artwork to breathe, making the gallery a pleasure to look around.
Though initially focussed on local, homegrown artists and projects in Spain, since 2006 Villa del Arte has been expanding internationally. Taking part in art fairs and exhibitions all over the world provides opportunities to discover exciting, fresh artists and introduce them into their collection. They have also recently opened a Vila del Arte gallery in Amsterdam, allowing them to build a firmer international presence in the art scene.
